Parents or teachers can click on the links below to download free educational, open source software to use with kids.  This software is similar to some of the most popular, costly software on the market.

Audacity - Audacity® is free, open source, cross-platform software for recording and editing sounds.
GoogleDocs - Create and share your work online with GoogleDocs.  You can create documents, spreadsheets, presentations, drawings or forms.  Allow students to collaborative in realtime on the same file.
GoogleEarth - Take virtual field trips around the globe by downloading GoogleEarth.  Search to find ways educators are using this in the classrooms.  
Microsoft Photostory 3 - A free application, available as a download from Microsoft, that allows users to create a visual story (show and tell presentation) from their digital photos.
Microsoft Small Basic - An introductory to computer programming for kids.  Visit the gallery to see what other kids around the globe have created and submitted. 
Oregon Trail - Remember the "old school" game Oregon Trail on your first home computer? Well you can have your students go retro by downloading this free replica to play one of the original simulator games. Have your students learn how seemingly small decisions can have life and death consequences as they head out West on the Oregon Trail.
Seterra - Download this free map quiz game for windows.  Learn world geography in a fun, engaging environment. 
Stellarium - This is a free, open source planetarium for your computer.  It shows a realistic sky in 3D.
StudyLadder - Free accounts for teachers to set up a classroom.  Students use a login to access study materials across the curriculum.  Resources for elementary aged students through high school are available.
TuxMath - Download this program to use with children and practice math skills.
TuxPaint - Kids love drawing and want to express their creativity.  This software is very similar to KidPix, which is program you would have to purchase.  TuxPaint allows students to use their imagination. 
TuxTyping - Practice your keyboarding skills and increase your speed using this software.
Windows Live Movie Maker - Quickly add photos and footage from your PC or camera into Movie Maker. Then fine tune your movie just the way you want it. You can move things around, speed it up or slow it down—it’s up to you.
